If you’ve mainly been diving in the ocean on a tropical coral reef, diving in a cenote for the first time is a completely different sensation. The vibrant colours of the coral reef and dynamics of the different fish and crustaceans, is replaced by unbelievable limestone formations, overhead environment, darkness and spiritual energy.
Most of the cenotes on the Yucatan peninsula are known for their crystal clear waters, however our “house reef”, Cenote Azul, is not like anywhere else. A completely unique ecosystem inhabits this 250 meter wide sinkhole, that goes down to a maximum depth of 90 meters. Its vertical walls are covered with some of the earliest life forms, an ancient reef building organism, the forefathers of the corals – the stromatolites.
The word “stromatolite” means “layered rock” and this is exactly what these organisms do. They cover the outside layer of the formations and use minerals from the water to deposit behind them in order to grow. You can read more about the stromatolites and the ecosystem of the cenote and the Bacalar lagoon in the “Environment” page.
Since we established ourselves here, we’ve been exploring the Cenote Azul to find the ultimate dive experiences for our clients. Because of its depth, width and variety of formations and underwater caverns created by the stromatolites there are plenty of dive sites to explore for all levels of divers.
Names of dive sites: the chimneys, the reef, the ridge, the desert, the cavern and the bear cave.
No matter the dive site, the Cenote Azul has many unique features that will make your dive experience special.
We offer daily tours going to the cenote with max 4 divers per guide.
